Collaboration with New Expressions

Visual Arts South West is working with museums and heritage partners including National Trust, South West Federation of Museums and Art Galleries, and museums across the region to develop greater understanding and opportunities for artists to collaborate effectively with museums and heritage settings.

Visual Arts South West is a major partner for the  New Expressions programme to enable greater Artist engagement with the programme, better collaboration with the museums sector and new opportunities to share audiences. In January 2014 we held an event to launch the programme, introduce artists to the possibilities of working within museums and the challenges and rewards of this way of working.

Since then we have launched the New Opportunities Award -  a completely new award developed by New Expressions and Contemporary Visual Arts Network, led by Visual Arts South West.

NOA is resourcing six small scale, experimental or innoavative, artist-led museum interventions, selected in open competition. At least half of the awards are supporting contemporary visual artists and museums with little or no previous experience of collaboration.

NOA provides an opportunity for shared experimentation and learning. The availability of mentoring advice and support from the New Expressions team is an important aspect of the award. The projects selected for support by the scheme are part of the network of artists and museum staff taking part in New Expressions 3.  NOA participants are invited to take part in the New Expressions 3 programme of field visits, workshops and seminars.

The selected NOA artist projects are:

Nancy J Clemance, working with Bridport Museum

Field Notes with artists Matthew Benington and Richard Baines with Penryn Museum

Hannah Leighton-Boycle working with Touchstones, Rochdale

David Bridges working with Armley Mills, Leeds

Tim Shore working with The Workhouse, Southwell

Tristram Aver working with Newstead Abbey, Nottingham
