Virtual reality collides with the physical world in Augmented Geology, a group exhibition of international artists organised and curated by Laura Köönikkä and Darja Zaitsev from Finnish Art Agency. Opening June 9t h 2017 until July 8t h 2017, this exhibition explores a laboratory of artworks in reaction to the natural and virtual science of rocks and the rock cycle. Hosted by KARST, Augmented Geology comprises of six international artists, Anna Estarriola, Lola González, Maggie Madden, Nabb+Teeri and Niamh O’Malley.

For the majority of these artists, rock is recreated and represented in a digital landscape, however, these artists approach the material (and its many meanings) in very different ways. This exhibition brings together installations, video works and sculpture to ask the question how does man made technology affect the physical and social environment we live in? One of the largest pieces is Anna Estarriola’s video installation The observer’s effect refers to changes that the act of observation will make on a phenomenon being observed (performance for a rock). In this piece, a one ton locally sourced rock takes centre stage and Estarriola reflects on how mankind’s desire to conduct reality is perceived through intimate and universal topics.

The geological concept of the rock cycle is represented in this collection both physically and digitally. Using the fundamental three types igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic, Augmented Geology studies the immaterial and physical possibilities of built environments and creates a space in which the unpredictable can happen. Speculative entities and hybrids are born in this exhibition.

Founded in 2013, Finnish Art Agency is an international creative agency who works with artists, museums, companies, and other organisations. The Agency provides advisory services, consultation and collaboration opportunities, valuing accessibility, integrity and openness above all else. It is Finnish Art Agency’s mission to be a forerunner in its field, a field in which there are few equivalents.

AUGMENTED GEOLOGY is supported by the Arts Council England and The Finnish Institute in London.
