Pick of the Week 2013

December's Picks Selected by VASW

As the art world winds down for the winter break, December's Pick of the Week feature will be selected by the VASW team. We'll be taking a break from Pick of the Week from the middle of the month but will be back in January with a new Guest Editor.

9 - 15 December

The Faces They Have Vanished

ICIA Art Space 1 & 2
Until Friday 17 January 2014
Opening hours: Monday - Friday 10:00 - 17:00

Ruth Maclennan's new works form a constellation of images and encounters from the artist's journeys in Crimea and Odessa. They refer not only to her actual travels but also to mythic, historic and metaphorical journeys.

VASW says

'Through poetic, mesmerising imagery we encounter fragments of stories, mythical, real and imagined. Ruth Maclennan takes us on a thought-provoking journey, which questions how we construct our realities…'

2 - 8 December

Cycling in the City

The Parlour Showrooms, 31/31a College Green Bristol Bristol BS1 5TB
Friday 06 December 2013 – Sunday 08 December 2013

What are our routes in and around the city?
What difference does a bike make?

Join us for Freedom of Movement: Women, Bikes, The Future by Jo Hellier, an interactive exhibition and cycle powered cinema screening. Jo has been teaching, cycling and fixing bikes in Bristol to encourage women mainly from a refugee background to cycle, observing what changes it can make to their freedom and future in the city.

VASW says:

'Cycling in the City is the last of 6 monthly events in the Parlour Showrooms In the City Series. The In the City Series invites us to re-imagine the city through live performance and the events in the programme so far have been varied and well considered, with strong performances including Clare Thornton and Paul Hurley's A Lexicon of Labout Movements in August.

'This programme has demonstrated the value of working in partnership and has seen the Parlour Showrooms team up with Residence, Knowle West Media Centre, PLaCE, In Between Time, MAYK, University of Bristol and You And Your Work.

'After a fantastic 3 year programme, the Parlour Showrooms closes it doors at the end of December - another good reason to highlight their work at this time. So enjoy Cycling in the City; it is one of the last opportunities to engage with, participate in and experience this great artist-led project.'
