Pick of the Week 2016

November's Guest Editor: Louise Coysh

Every month we invite a Guest Editor to select our Pick of the Week feature. Chosen from the activities listed in our events pages they select highlights from across the region.

This November, Louise Coysh, Director of Arts & Culture at the University of Southampton, is making the selection.

Louise Coysh, Director of Arts & Culture, leads Arts at University of Southampton, which promotes the University’s world-class arts to the widest possible audience. Prior to joining Southampton in April 2016, she was Senior Curator at Art on the Underground and led on Labyrinth (2010) by Mark Wallinger.

With over 15 years in the visual arts, she specialises in developing extraordinary projects with international artists and diverse communities that exist beyond the gallery, such as work with Faisal Abdu’allah, Åbäke, Liam Gillick, Dryden Goodwin, Runa Islam, Jasleen Kaur, Nils Norman, Zineb Sedira, Bob and Roberta Smith and composer Matt Rogers.

Arts at the University of Southampton is a new initiative, bringing together the University’s arts offer to create a ‘third space’ to nurture interdisciplinary collaborations and public engagement. This draws on the University’s dynamic research and education community, including John Hansard Gallery, Winchester School of Art (WSA), concert hall Turner Sims and associate organisation NST – Nuffield Southampton Theatres.

This comes at a time when Southampton is undergoing a major cultural renaissance. This autumn British Art Show 8 (9 Oct 2016 – 15 Jan 2017) and the local, artist-led BAS8 Southampton Fringe takes place in the City. Studio 144 opens in 2017. A new home to John Hansard Gallery, community film company City Eye and NST City, it will provide fantastic facilities and greater access to visual arts, theatre and filmmaking in heart of the City. Alongside this, the Old Town will be revitalised by an ambitious project by ‘a space arts’ to transform God’s House Tower, a 13th century gatehouse in the town walls into a new arts and heritage centre.
