April's Guest Editor: Jon Barrett

Every month we invite a Guest Editor to select our Pick of the Week feature. Chosen from the activities listed in our events pages they select highlights from across the region.

This April, Jon Barrett, Gallery Manager at Contains Art in Watchet, Somerset, is making the selection.

Jon Barrett is gallery manager at Contains Art in Watchet, Somerset, a quayside arts venue in converted shipping containers consisting of a gallery and studios. He joined their team last year having relocated from London where he had worked for the contemporary art department of auctioneers Phillips de Pury & Company and ran a London art dealership for six years.

With Contains Art he has enjoyed a season that has seen the engagement of Tessa Jackson OBE as an external curator and a rich programme of exhibitions and events, including a performance by Bob & Roberta Smith. He now looks forward to their season ahead, which began on 1st April with Damien Hirst’s former employee bringing sharks to the shipping container. Their season includes Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Touring exhibition, an installation of over 3,000 postcards in an Edwardian milking parlour and a new publication of The Time Machine within HG Wells’ 150th birthday year, to name a few.

With the arrival of Piers Taylor as the architect for Watchet’s new East Quay development, Contains Art and Watchet’s Onion Collective will oversee a brand-new arts centre in coming years, a three-storey building incorporating multiple art studios, a paper mill, print studio, geology lab, restaurant, holiday rentals and a much larger gallery venue for Contains Art.

Jon also curates a monthly subscription package, Extra. Filled with an eclectic mix of cultural findings to excite and entertain you, each one is a surprise delivered to your door with magazines and more. Extra supports Contains Art, a not-for-profit venture at the same time!
