Every month we invite a Guest Editor to select our Pick of the Week feature. Chosen from the activities listed in our events pages they select highlights from across the region.

This May, artist collaboration Keiken Collective is making the selection

Keiken is a collaborative practice predominately made up of Tanya Cruz, Hana Omori, Jess Pemberton and Isabel Ramos formed in Falmouth in 2014. Keiken frequently collaborates with Oh Mr James, The Floating Cellist, Otto Teakle, George Stone and others.

Keiken is the Japanese word for experience, something that is integral to their collaborative practice and philosophy. They challenge the dynamic of reality and question how societal introjection governs the way we think and perceive. In expanding ‘networks of networks’ they explore how technology is affecting our individual and collective consciousness. Keiken activate networked spaces as a site in which the consciousness’ of archetypal stereotypes/figures are used as facets to unravel the futures and ramifications of our accelerating technological age. Keiken operate through the modes of digital metanarrative, constructed and/or subverted realities, writing and play.

They recently curated House of Questions #hoq, a week of live activity, workshops, performance and screenings for Newlyn Art Gallery’s Palace of Culture. In Autumn 2016 Keiken completed a residency in combination with being commissioned for The Future Project, Inland Art Festival, Redruth where they exhibited @MotherDigital.

Keiken are very excited to be showing their virtual reality film @MotherDigital at Plymouth Contemporary 2017. 41 artists will exhibit work surrounding the theme ‘Visions’ traversing the political and social, alternative realities and other dimensions, utopian and dystopian, imaginary and absurd in a time of turbulent global change.

The exhibition will run from 15th July - 2nd September at Peninsula Arts and Karst Gallery.
