Every month we invite a Guest Editor to select our Pick of the Week feature. Chosen from the activities listed in our events pages they select highlights from across the region.

This March, Ros Carter, Head of Exhibitions at John Hansard Gallery, is making the selection.

Ros Carter is Head of Exhibitions at John Hansard Gallery, part of the University of Southampton. With over 25 years’ experience of organising exhibitions at a national and international level, Ros has curated and overseen numerous exhibitions and artist’s commissions. This year John Hansard Gallery is entering an exciting phase, with the imminent opening of a new expanded space on Southampton’s Guildhall Square, as part of Studio 144, working alongside arts partners City-Eye and Nuffield Southampton Theatres as a part of Southampton’s exciting Cultural Quarter. During February this year they opened for a week with JHG Sampler, which gave a taster of what the Gallery will be doing in in its new home and within its new programme.

JHG Sampler included exciting projects by the artists: Hetain Patel, Rhona Byrne, Rob Crosse, Elaine Mitchener, David Batchelor, Sam Laughlin and the artist collective, Stair/Slide/Space. The Gallery will launch its permanent programme in May 2018 with a large scale exhibition of works by Gerhard Richter, organised with ARTIST ROOMS, TATE Collection and Gerhard Richter’s studio. Subsequent exhibitions throughout 2018 include the works of Hamad Butt, Caroline Bergvall, Charlotte Posenenske, Victor Burgin, Walter van Rijn, John Latham, Edward Woodman, Lisa Watts, Siobhan Hapaska and many more!

Additionally, Ros is an active member of national and international networks, and in 2017 was one of three international jury members for the Leopold Bloom Art Prize in Budapest, Hungary. Ros also plays a key role in working at a local and regional level with other arts organisations and galleries in the Southampton and Hampshire region, and was one of the Mentors for VASW’s Artist Mentoring Scheme, working with Katy Connor and Chantal Powell.
