Commissioners: East Hampshire District Council and Horndean Parish Council are seeking to appoint a visual artist (Tromp I’oeil / mural).
The project theme
Horndean is a civil parish within the district of East Hampshire.
The Background and context
Horndean is a civil parish within the district of East Hampshire and has a population of around 13,000.
The Gales Brewery was built in 1847 and is situated on the A3 in the centre of Horndean, which is now by-passed by the A3M. In 2005 the brewery was acquired by Fullers and closed. The brewery building, apart from the iconic tower was demolished and replaced with an apartment block. Councillors worked closely with the developer to ensure that the new building had considerable echoes of the Victorian brewery it replaced.
This block of flats has provision for a piece of public art. We are looking for an artist to produce a piece of art inspired by the rich heritage of Horndean as a major brewing centre.
