Chippenham Museum

Chippenham Museum tells the fascinating story of this historic Wiltshire market town with a varied exhibitions and events programme.

Housed in an 18th century townhouse, Chippenham Museum tells the fascinating story of this historic Wiltshire market town from its prehistoric origins to the present day. Learn about the town’s development, through its connections to river, road and rail and explore its surprising links to Alfred the Great and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Chippenham Museum is free to visit with two floors to explore and level access throughout. Enjoy regularly changing temporary exhibitions and a varied programme of walks, talks, family activities and events. Find something special in the museum shop, which supports a variety of local makers.

Chippenham Town Council looks after Chippenham Museum and also the town's historic Yelde Hall, a beautiful 15th century timber framed building a two-minute walk from the museum in the historic heart of Chippenham. The Yelde Hall, with its fascinating lock-up and council chamber, is free to visit and open at peak times or by appointment.

Whilst in Chippenham stroll through historic streets and spot wildlife from riverside paths. Relax in a choice of parks and sample a range of shops and eateries in the town centre.

Chippenham is on the London to Bristol trainline and the town's transport links offer the opportunity to explore the Cotswolds with historic villages Lacock and Castle Combe nearby.
