Aspex Gallery, The Vulcan, PO1 3BF
Monday 01 October 2018 – Thursday 31 October 2019
Every month we invite a Guest Editor to select our Pick of the Week feature. Chosen from the activities listed in our events pages they select highlights from across the region.
This June we welcome Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex:
Joanne Bushnell has been Director of Aspex, in Portsmouth, since 1999, seeing the organisation through significant change, including relocation from the back streets of the city, to a converted naval storehouse on the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays.
Established by artists in 1981, Aspex’s mission is to support emerging artists and reveal the creative process. It has a rich 33-year history of supporting local and international emerging artists at key points in their career, enabling them to make a step change in their practice. Many of today’s international art superstars including Mona Hatoum, Cornelia Parker and Richard Wilson to name but a few, were all given opportunities to make and show new work at an early stage.
Aspex has sought to continue and build on this work with its Emergency open submission programmes, running biennially since 2003 for visual artists, and more recently annually for designer/makers. It will also launch, South Central a new programme for artists based within a 1.5 hour drive time of Portsmouth later this month.
Engagement is at the heart of Aspex, which provides a window into the creative process, encouraging audiences to participate in whichever way they choose – looking, thinking, talking, writing or making. The organisation prides itself on its accessibility, and has an excellent record of working with people of all ages, encouraging them to get involved in contemporary visual art, deepen their understanding, enjoyment and confidence to engage.
Aspex aims to be more than a gallery. This year it will develop its main building as a creative hub: a site for production, social gathering, artists’ residencies and inventive business start-up; while opening up new spaces for exhibitions, commencing with the launch of Aspex Guildhall on the 17 June with Jonny Hannah’s All That Other Mother Jazz.
Working towards a South West where talented artists thrive, and a resilient and connected visual arts ecology that inspires more engaged and diverse audiences to value and advocate for its work.
