Pick of the Week 2016

September's Guest Editor: Francesca Hawkesworth

Every month we invite a Guest Editor to select our Pick of the Week feature. Chosen from the activities listed in our events pages they select highlights from across the region.

This September, Francesca Hawkesworth, Project Coordinator at Ocean Studios in Plymouth, is making the selection.

Francesca Hawkesworth is the project coordinator at Ocean Studios, Plymouth. Having been open for just a year, the Community Interest Company provides affordable studios, workshop facilities and business support for over 50 artists and offers a space to create in the city of Plymouth. Francesca is also part of the group Visual Arts Plymouth who represent organisations, communities and artists across the city. They organise cultural events around the city including the Plymouth Art Weekender which will take place on 23-25 September 2016.

Francesca’s role within Ocean Studios includes the general coordination of the studios, exhibitions and events. Ocean Studios has had a programme including the work of Grayson Perry, Richard Deacon, Bill Woodrow, Mary Kelly to name a few, and the exhibition space will soon be welcoming the work of Jock Mooney with his show ‘WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU WANT?’ opening to the public for the Plymouth Art Weekender 2016. The events programme at Ocean Studios also extends to open studios, pop-up theatre, workshops, CPD talks, markets and networking events.

Born in Plymouth, Francesca returned to her hometown after studying Fine Art at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design and a residency at FabLab Lisbon, Portugal. On returning it has been her mission to be part of turning Plymouth into a thriving cultural hot spot, nurturing and pushing visual arts and culture in the city. This has led her to work on various projects through Ocean Studios and other organisations within the city, including WWW.THEOCTOPUSWASNAKEDBUTTHECRABWASDRESSED.COM, which was in the PAC home space at Plymouth Art Centre for the last September’s Plymouth Art Weekender. From working on this project she was keen to organise events for the coming Weekender which is where the role of VAP activator fitted in with her role at Ocean Studios.
