Call out for Artist Educator: Mapping Southampton's Phone Spaces
John Hansard Gallery seeks an Artist Educator to work on a research project around young people’s phone use and cultures.
We are seeking an experienced Artist Educator to work on a new project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), part of UK Research and Innovation, and led by Dr Eve Colpus, Associate Professor of History, University of Southampton.
The research project is entitled ‘Children and young people’s telephone use and telephone cultures in Britain c.1984-1999’. It will examine the relationship between young people’s telephone use and youth agency in Britain in the recent past, including in relation to young people’s phone cultures today. It will draw on the approaches of child-centred histories and studies of technology and technology use, seeking to reveal the untold history of children’s telephone usage both as an activity, and its contribution to identity-making.
Families and young people will be invited to submit memories, photographs and video content of their own phone use, or phones they have observed, in Southampton from the 1980s to the present day via the project website, or in person at John Hansard Gallery.
To inspire interest and involvement, four Space to Create! half-day workshops will be hosted by John Hansard Gallery between May and August 2021. These sessions will be designed and led by the Artist Educator, to be supported by a Gallery Assistant, using creative prompts with the intention of encouraging participants to put historical material from Southampton’s recent history into dialogue with their contemporary experience.
We are inviting applications from artists who have an established socially engaged visual arts practice, and value collaborative working and engaging children, young people and adults in developing their own voice and approach. Artists should be available to deliver four Saturday workshops either in person/online and can have experience of developing digital resources.
Fee: £800 (inclusive of planning and session set up). There is a separate budget for materials.
