Take A Part and Coxside Arts Action Group (CAAG) have joined together to commission an artist or collective of artists to lead on Coxside Carnival, a community event in Plymouth. Coxside Carnival hasn’t happened for many years, but it used to be an annual event with parades, floats, fancy dress contests, and even a tug of war across the quayside. The CAAG would like to see proposals which investigate the social histories of past Coxside Carnivals, as well as co-creating new traditions with the community.\

This is a new and exciting commission for the Coxside community and Plymouth, which will bring together art, heritage, and people. As well as engaging the local community, a key aim is to draw people to come and visit Coxside, which the community has described as ‘Plymouth’s forgotten corner’.

Everyone at Take A Part is acutely aware of the continually developing situation regarding the current pandemic, and we’re trying to do what we can to continue to support the residents of Coxside and the artists we are working with. The work that we are delivering is responding to how residents are dealing with the challenges of this, and it is our hope that the work of this commission will help the community come together whilst having to adhere to the social distancing measures currently in place.
