John Hansard Gallery – a leading public gallery of contemporary art that is part of the University of Southampton and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation – is seeking to appoint an experienced Engagement Curator who will be a key member of the Engagement and Learning Programme Team.

The successful applicant will assist with the delivery of our acclaimed and innovative engagement and learning programme for schools, colleges, community groups, young people, families, adults and older people.

The Engagement Curator will coordinate the JHG Collective, our Young Curators Programme, Space to Create! (our family friendly Saturday programme) and the Creative Employment Programme of apprenticeships, internships and traineeships.

They will also project manage JHG’s extended off-site programme of ambitious artist commissions and residencies, developing new commissioning models for collaborative practice.

Previous experience of working in a gallery environment in a similar role is essential, along with a good knowledge of gallery engagement and learning, and a commitment to diversity, equality, inclusiveness and making contemporary art accessible to all.

John Hansard Gallery plays a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region, through its locally engaged and internationally acclaimed programme. Established in 1979, the Gallery entered a new chapter in its history when relocating to the purpose-built city centre gallery, part of Studio 144 in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter in 2018. The relocation has increased the opportunity for greater impact, both in terms of artists’ production and reaching new and diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

We seek to ensure that our organisation and programme are relevant and accessible to all, with equality, diversity and fairness at the core of what we do. We are committed to ensuring that all employees and job applicants are provided with equality of opportunity in employment. We therefore encourage applications from all sections of the community.
