Curated by Val Williams and Karen Shepherdson, Seaside: Photographed, is a major touring exhibition that examines the relationship between photographers, photography and the British seaside from the 1850s to the present.

The exhibition looks at the way that the British seaside has become a vivid background to the drama of everyday life, seen through the acute, critical and engaged visions of 70 photographers from across the UK, USA and Europe. Seaside: Photographed will open at John Hansard Gallery in Southampton in late 2020.

To accompany the show, John Hansard Gallery is developing an outreach programme that engages early years children and their parents and/or carers, reflecting on what is significant to them about their local coastline.

John Hansard Gallery is looking for an artist to work in parallel with an experienced artist educator, to create a new artwork in partnership with early years groups in September 2020, working with both parents and children as they investigate their relationship to the unique coast along the Solent and Southampton water’s edge.
