A Picture of Health

This special exhibition for NHS Staff explores health and wellbeing through Swindon’s collection of modern and contemporary British art.

18/04/21 – 04/07/21
In 1871 the Great Western Railway Hospital in Swindon welcomed their first patient. 150 years later in 2020 and 2021, STEAM Museum welcomed doctors, nurses, other healthcare workers and volunteers vaccinating patients against COVID19.

To celebrate the work of Swindon’s dedicated healthcare workers over the past 150 years and more, the Swindon Art on Tour Team have put together a display of artworks. Selected from the modern art collection at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, the artworks are themed around health and wellbeing.

‘A Picture of Health’ includes paintings by nationally important artists such as Mary Fedden, Howard Hodgkin and Christopher Nevinson, as well as artists of local interest like Kate Tryon and George Reason, who painted captivating scenes of Swindon in the 1900s.

Swindon Museum and Art Gallery and STEAM Museum hope that ‘A Picture of Health’ will provide a relaxing atmosphere for staff and volunteers working at the Covid vaccination centre. An online version of the exhibition is also available for those wishing to enjoy it from home - https://artuk.org/discover/curations/a-picture-of-health.

The display was sponsored by Pebley Beach and organised by the Art on Tour team from Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Launched in January 2020, the Art on Tour programme aims to share Swindon’s art collection with more people and places throughout the town.
