JupiterSHOWCASE is delighted to announce that Truro-based artist Rob Unett will be presenting his work in progress show, 'In Recline' at the gallery opening on 19th September 2020 – 02 October 2020.

Unett is a process-driven artist for whom outcome is unimportant and discovery everything. He is already well-known for his solitary, pained figures normally captured in standing poses. In this show, his abstract interpretations explore the human figure clothed and nude in seated and reclining poses.

He references a range of art historical influences stating: 'I have been looking at many historical interpretations of seated and lying figures such as Venus in a Landscape by Jacopo Palma il Vecchio, Henry Moore's Reclining Figure and Graham Sutherland's controversial portrait of Winston Churchill'.

'I spend a lot of time studying standing and moving figures. Exploring different poses gives my work new angle. It has felt like I am studying a landscape rather than a person. Forms I found familiar are now unpredictable with limbs becoming hidden, the body moulding into chairs and fabrics folding and reshaping the body’.

Rob Unett works with immediate and poignant thoughts, reacting to the moment. His surfaces are soaked with media, swallowing arrays of colour; a vocabulary to visually speak through. Whether it is through delicate lines, rhythmic washes, violent slashes, smears, tears or bleeds, emotions are released and images emerge. Sex, gender, pose, gesture, confusion, destruction and construction, all feature in the abstracted figures and scenes Unett depicts.
