From the grand idea of 19th century romanticism to the more prosaic: the back yard, the park, a hedge in Somerset, a grand beech tree in Leigh Woods long overlooked and taken for granted. Isolated from friends and family, the naturalism of the local became a source of consolation and calm, a way to rethink the exotic vistas I had painted and shown in previous exhibitions. As we stumble towards ‘normality’, this intimacy of the local remains with me as a reminder that ‘landscapes’ are just outside our doors.
