"Originally scheduled for June 2020, this exhibition was planned around favourite coffee shops and outings to much loved places with a strong element of sociable collaboration. Suddenly the world changed for everyone. The last year or so has had a profound effect on our perceptions of others. The need for personal space, distance from others and the avoidance of social interaction has been key. People have been exploring their local areas on foot or bicycle out of necessity and seeing the landscape from different perspectives. Staying close to home may have been experienced as restrictive and frustrating for some or as an opportunity to open our eyes to what is actually on our doorsteps."

The contrast in the styles of the artists highlights a difference in outlook: Elaine sees place, and Teresa responds to people’s reaction to place.

In her paintings Elaine depicts landscapes with presence, a natural drama that impacts on the senses and challenges preconceptions of colour, form and scale by drawing in the viewer and offering an moment of reflection and solitude.

Teresa’s work is a playful response: people interacting with one another, and the place is the context for that interaction.

"Potentially our view of the world, the landscape and ourselves and others, has changed and the struggle to return to “some kind of normal” has only just begun."
