Real/Surreal

An exhibition of paintings by Simon Dobbs and Tony Barton. Opening view: Tuesday 26 April, 3.30 — 6.30 pm.

Simon Dobbs is an artist living and working in south Devon. He studied at the Saint Martin’s School of Art before training as an architect and town planner, taking up painting full time in the 1990s. From 1997 – 2002 he ran his own gallery in Salcombe, and has exhibited in London, Japan and locally in Devon. He works in acrylic on larger canvases in a style following Gaugin’s mantra: “Don’t paint direct from nature. Art is an abstraction. Study nature, then brood on it.”

Tony Barton is a re-emerging artist after an absence of 50 years, his interest regenerated in the long, quiet days of lockdown. He enjoys pursuing the strange, bizarre and unreal aspects of the planet we occupy, with an emphasis on looking after it while we are here.
