About the course
This course is designed for those with a practical interest in medieval art, stone carving and nature and will suit both compete beginners and those with some stone carving experience. The course will take place in Nick's timber frame studio in the village of Drayton on the Somerset Levels. The development and evolution of foliage carving through the Anglo Saxon, Romanesque, Medieval and later periods will be explained and discussed. You will learn how to observe leaf forms and how these natural shapes are transformed into stylised, geometric and naturalistic forms.
The course is tutored by experienced carver and conservator, Nick Durnan. He has been teaching for over 35 years and has run many stone carving weekend and one day courses. The course will cover: tool and stone selection, carving and stone working techniques, and health and safety in the carver’s workshop. This course, with a high level of individual tuition, is structured to the needs and abilities of the participants. Over the two days, each participant will carve a simple romanesque or medieval foliage design in fine grained Caen or Bath limestone which they will be able to take away with them at the end of the course. You may bring your own design if you wish.
