Susan Derges: Eden 6

Created by Devon-based artist Susan Derges, Eden 6 is the first major work acquired for RAMM’s new contemporary photography collection.

Derges’ Ilfochrome print was made in 2004 in the River Taw near Exeter. It forms part of a series of works that used her local Dartmoor landscape at night as a makeshift darkroom, using the patterns and debris of the river as her abstract subject. She describes Eden 6 as part of ‘an ongoing enquiry’ that started when she began making images that ‘give expression to interconnectedness and the wonderful complexity of our world’. The fascinating work draws on Derges’ experimental techniques and explores current climate and ecological crises.

Eden 6 was purchased in 2020 with assistance from the Friends of Exeter Museum & Art Gallery Trust, private donors, and the ACE/V&A Purchase Grant Fund.
